Plote Celebrates 25 Years with Boulder Ridge
By Dan Shepard and Jeff Lewis
Ray Plote (now 75), his wife and two sons, started the Boulder Ridge Communities in the Spring of 1989 with an ambitious vision that included 852 residential units within an adjoining golf course development located on over 1,155 acres with 28 lakes and ponds. The goal was to create a place for people to live and enjoy outdoor space, an active lifestyle through the use of the Country Club and its amenities, all while allowing residents to be close to their workplace and shopping.
Prior to the development of what the Boulder Ridge Communities are today, the land was owned and farmed by the Plote family for many years. As a result, the design of the subdivisions were carefully planned by Mr. Plote to use the existing contours of the land and rich farm soils to provide for the scenic views and connected drainage lakes that exist currently.
The Boulder Ridge Communities consist of the following residential developments:
• The Lakes of Boulder Ridge – 231 luxury duplexes and single family homes
• The Villas of Boulder Ridge – an 83 unit townhome community
• The Estates, Greens and Fairways of Boulder Ridge, which include a combined total of 538 single family homes
The focal point of the development is Boulder Ridge Country Club, a private club offering activities and dining options for the entire family. Golf, corporate, social or dining memberships are available for you to enjoy all the amenities of the Club.
The Club’s elegantly appointed clubhouse overlooks 27 holes of championship golf, a tennis complex, and pool to create a social atmosphere of fun and relaxation. In addition, the Club ranks as one of the premier banquet and wedding venues in the Fox Valley and northwestern suburbs, with scenic outdoor wedding space available and seating to accommodate over 500 people.
The golf course was originally designed by golf personality Fuzzy Zoeller and well known golf course creator Robert Lohmann. In fact, this year (2015) the Club is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Congratulations!
The “Lakes” Community is the remaining residential development to be completed and is located near the intersection of Frank and Algonquin Road. It is bordered by a golf course and wild life preserve. It is one of several satellite communities associated with the Boulder Ridge Country Club. Construction began in 2002, but with the economic downturn, sales did not accelerate again until 2012. Based upon the projection, this Community should be fully developed by 2017.
Once construction is complete, the Lakes will be comprised of 194 luxury duplexes and 37 single family homes. The single family residences represent about 15% of the total home sites. It also contains 1.6 miles of private streets, which include standardized signage and street lights. An unmanned guard house, located on Frank Road provides exclusive entry to the Lakes Community. A secondary emergency only access road is maintained at the west end of the property.
The residents maintain close knit relationships, supporting community activities such as Men’s bocce ball, Ladies and Men’s breakfasts, annual summer picnic, road rally, Christmas and Holiday party, monthly dining in and out events, Men’s poker night and Ladies bunko. Additionally, many residents join together in Caribbean and European vacation cruises during the winter. It seems that no matter where residents travel, families experience the “we’re home” feeling when they return their community at Boulder Ridge.
Ray Plote and the Plote Homes LLC continue to develop and build real estate projects that have the same enduring qualities of excellence as the Boulder Ridge Communities. Even today, Ray and his wife continue to be proud residents of the Boulder Ridge Community in which he originally envisioned and created.
Information on sales for the remaining home sites within the communities can be obtained at the sales center located in the Lakes of Boulder Ridge, or by calling 847-854-3008.

The Cliffs of Fontana by Plote Homes
Thoughtful design, quality construction and convenient amenities within walking distance of Geneva Lake.
Entering the north side of the Village of Fontana on Highway 67, it’s evident changes have been taking place: big changes. Not only has the Village created beautifully landscaped boulevards high- lighted with charming lamp posts and fixtures, but as you begin your descent into the heart of the downtown district, your eye is drawn to a strikingly quaint community on your right called The Cliffs of Fontana.
Gone is the gravel pit that once occupied this 24-acre site. The community that has emerged featuring 66 home sites is a tes- tament to the vision of Ray Plote, the 75-year-old founder of Plote Construction, Inc. According to Daniel Shepard, executive vice president of Plote Homes, LLC, Ray Plote’s 50 years of experience in the excavation and gravel business gave him a unique perspective of how to transform this site. “There haven’t been many of these types of projects in the development industry and he wanted to take on this challenge to create a useful and vibrant community of homes.”
LAND IS SCULPTED, HOME SITES PLOTTED
According to Shepard, under Ray Plote’s tutelage, his team moved 400,000 cubic yards of material without taking one truckload off the site. As a result, the sheer cliffs have been softened into a land- scaped hillside, private roads gently wind through the community, and amenities like a large pool with pool house, a playground, a bocce ball court and a walking trail to Duck Pond Recreation Area are available for homeowners.
Many home sites are designed to accommodate homes with walk- out lower levels. “Our buyers like this,” says Shepard, “because we have an earth-moving company, when we design our subdivisions,
we try to allow for a lot of latitude for this type of home.”
According to Shepard, Plote Homes builds semi-custom, high-quality houses that are backed by a war- ranty that goes well beyond others in the industry. “A semi-custom home allows the buyer to get exactly what they want,” says Shepard. “There are seven different floor plans to use as a starting point. All types of modifications
can be made, including moving walls and adding upgrades. The real benefit is you don’t have the upfront architectural fees of a custom home builder — which may be thousands of dollars. When working with Plote Homes, you get exactly what you want without engaging an architect and additional steps. That’s our advantage.”
Plote builds homes that average approximately 2,900 square feet with 2,100 square feet of first floor living space. Ranch-style homes with open floor plans and first floor master bedroom suites are their most sought-after designs. “Most of our home buyers are a little bit older and they’re not looking for two-story living,” explains Shepard. “Finishing the lower level for most buyers is the ideal solution for visiting children and grandchildren.”
NOT NEW TO HOME BUILDING
Although the Cliffs of Fontana is the first real estate development Plote Homes, LLC has embarked on in Wisconsin, the company has been building homes in Chicago’s northwest suburbs for more than 25 years. The Lakes of Boulder Ridge in Lake in the Hills and The Fairway View Estates in Algonquin are just two of their developments.
“We build between 20-30 homes per year, all of which are semi-custom,” says Shepard. “We are proud to say we are still a family-owned company that has expanded over the years from its beginnings as a road building company.” According to Shepard, Plote Homes, LLC is just one of 39 companies under the Plote umbrella.
PARADE OF HOMES MODEL
During this summer’s Lakeland Home Builders Association Parade of Homes, Plote Home’s Ashton model at The Cliffs of Fontana was featured. The exterior of the Ashton, like all homes in the enclave, has a neutral color palette. The architectural style was designed to fit in with existing building materials and colors used in Fontana’s historic district, notes Shepard.
The three bedroom, three bath home has 1,944 square feet of living space on the main level. Its 10 foot ceilings make the open concept floor plan — living area, kitchen and dining area — feel even more spacious. Just a few of its many features include beautiful 4" plank hardwood flooring, granite and quartz countertops, two wood burning fireplaces with gas igniters, master bedroom suite with tray ceiling and luxury Kohler shower. A screened room and adjoining deck complement the rear of the house. The lower level’s 1,178 square feet has been transformed into more entertaining space with a fireplace and wet bar.
The home’s design and features are spectacular but it’s what’s behind the walls that Shepard says is equally important. “We build a quality home with 2x6’ construction, three-panel windows, and include the very best in energy-efficient features.”
The Cliffs of Fontana, explains Shepard, is ideal for those who would love to have a home in the Geneva Lakes area but don’t want to worry about yard maintenance, including grass mowing in the warmer months and snow plowing in the winter. All of that is cared for by the community’s association, so the homeowner can take advantage of the community’s amenities like the pool or playground, or take the quick, four-block walk to the Geneva Lake. Shepard explains that about half of the homes in the Cliffs of Fontana are owned by part-time residents. Of the 66 building sites, 52 are remaining.
To visit The Cliffs of Fontana and see first- hand the Plote Homes advantage, call Sales Manager Barbara von Riesen at 262-275-6000 for an appointment to see the Ashton model. The community sales office is open Thursday – Monday, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
