Watering Information
Your new shrubs and trees need to be watered for approximately 1-2 hrs once to twice a week depending on the weather. If it rains approximately 1”, watering is not needed that week. Late in the season water once every other week for 1 hr unless there is significant rainfall. This is best done by using a soaker hose or laying a hose at the base of the tree or shrub. If using a regular hose set the water at a drip/drip setting. The surrounding soil of trees and shrubs should dry out completely between watering. Feel around the base and if it feels wet, don’t water. Most people over-water their shrubs and trees. The basic rule of thumb is to water for longer periods of time, but infrequently. Depending on the season, new trees and shrubs should be watered for about a month after planting maybe longer during droughts/hot weather.
Perennials and groundcover need slightly more water than trees and shrubs. This could be every other day or several times a week depending on the weather. Again, a soaker hose is best.
New Sod/seed should be watered every day. Late in the season water every other day for a few hrs. Water on warm days in January and February to prevent dry out. Use a sprinkler for this application.
Watering is best in the morning to allow for plants to dry out. Keep water off the leaves as much as possible. Soaker hoses work best for this.
SEEDED LAWNS:
Get your newly seeded lawn off to a good start:
Now that your lawn if seeded here are a few tips that should help get it off to a good healthy start. A little attention in the beginning goes a long way toward providing years of beauty and enjoyment in the future.
Watering:
The single most important requirement for germinating turf grass seed is adequate moisture. Keeping the seed damp – either by rainfall or irrigation – will encourage proper seed development.
The first watering can be done right away. It should moisten the soil to a depth of two or three inches…but gently. Be careful not to apply the water with such force that it washes away soil or dislodges the seed.
After the initial watering, irrigate the newly seeded area lightly and frequently – two or three times a day, if possible – until the grass begins to establish and grow. Then the intervals between watering can be lengthened and the amount applied at any one time increased. Watering at night is not recommended. Exact watering times and amounts depend on weather conditions. To tell how much water you are applying, place a straight side container in watering path – when 1” accumulates in container – grass has received 1”.

SODDED LAWNS:
Watering:
The single most important requirement for sod is adequate moisture.
Water the sod every day for the first and second week. Keep the sod wet. Do not let the sod dry out or it will yellow immediately. The sod has no root system to draw water from the soil.
During the third and fourth weeks, the sod begins to root. You can then water every other day or as needed, depending on the weather.
Watering at night is not recommended.
